Boeing Satellite Systems International (BSSI)/Integrated Defense Systems
Jim Simpson is the vice president of Business Development for Boeing's Space and Intelligence Systems business unit. In this role, he oversees all business development operations, personnel and budgets for multi-billion dollar business involved in national security, civil and commercial space and intelligence programs. He is also the vice president of Business Development for Boeing Satellite Systems International.
Simpson was previously the business development lead for S&IS Boeing Satellite Systems International and executive director of Commercial and Civil Satellite programs and Satellite Development Center Business Development. He also led business development activities for Launch & Satellite Systems, where he was responsible for the integrated business development activities of the Boeing Satellite Systems, Sea Launch, Expendable Launch Systems, and Rocketdyne Propulsion and Power business units.
Before taking the position in Launch and Satellite Systems, Simpson was the vice president of Business Development for Boeing's Launch Services. In this position, he was responsible for all commercial sales, marketing, and customer engineering for the Delta family of launch systems and Sea Launch. This appointment was an expansion of his role as The Boeing Company's Director of International Sales and Customer Program Development for Expendable Launch Systems. In this position, he was responsible for activities associated with international sales and customer engineering for all Delta launch systems.
Simpson has over 25 years of aerospace experience, including proposal manager and deputy program manager of the Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) Low Cost Concept Validation Phase (Phase 1). In this capacity, he directed the EELV program activities involving concept viability, operations, manufacturing, risk, and program execution.
Previously, Simpson was senior manager of Business Development for the Space Transportation division where he oversaw business development of Delta launch system evolution and the Space Products Directorate. His responsibilities for the Directorate included the Delta III and Delta IV business plans, Titan IV payload fairing, Space Transportation System's solid rocket booster hardware, and the AF/NASA National Launch System program.
Simpson was responsible for the technology development for the NASA-Air Force Advanced Launch System, the precursor to the EELV. While performing this function, he developed the first McDonnell Douglas Space Systems Company strategic technology management plan, which became a company standard.
Simpson has authored several papers on such topics as the space segment market environment, Delta launch systems, and materials development. Simpson holds a master of business administration degree from the University of Southern California, bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Materials Engineering from the University of California at Los Angeles, and a graduate certificate in Engineering Management from the California Institute of Technology. He is a member of AIAA and the Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honor Society.
